It figures...

I get all geared up to meet someone on my last week here in Boise and a medical crisis messes it all up. It ends up being a good thing, but it sure is lousy timing.

The situation: Bouncing around in the heavy equipment brought my attention to the lifting of the retina in my left eye. So, I make a few calls and the soonest appointment I can get to have it looked at is the next day, but I have to be home to do it. So, I haul ass out of Boise and make it back home. (Thank the powers that be that there were no deer on the road that night as I could not have seen them.) So, I get to the doc's the next day and I am still kinda hopeful that this will turn out to be something minor that can be cleared up with a few pills. That hope is totally destroyed when I hear him say, "Oh, yeah," in a kind of voice that implies he thought I was full of it until that moment. So, he sends me to another nearby town on an emergency referral to a doc that can actually fix the problem. He takes one look and I now find myself being rushed off to emergency surgery. Lovely. So he gets in there and finds not only did I lift the retina, but have also managed to tear it in 2 places. Apparently the problem started a while ago as one of the tears has started to heal and I have scar tissue in there. This can cause more problems later on so we'll have to keep an eye on it. So 908 laser tacks later and my retina is re-attached.

The bad news: as I didn't catch this when the original tear happened, the scar tissue that has formed can tighten up as scars do and lift my retina again. I will also lose some of the peripheral vision in that eye. I also have to spend the next two months looking at the floor to allow the bubble that is now in my eye to hold the retina in place while it heals.

The good news: I caught it before it got into the part of the eye that would have caused permanent loss of vision. (It was only 2 microns away, though I am still not sure how close that is, it's a phrase he used that's stuck in my head and it sounds pretty damned close.) If bouncing in the equipment hadn't made the problem worse, I may not have caught it before it did enough damage to cause total loss of vision. I have huge peripheral vision so a loss of a little isn't really all that much. I usually have to tell them to move their hands further away when they are trying to check it. The school is working with me so that I miss just enough days to still be able to complete the course and not lose the 2 weeks I have already put into this stint. My lap and other people's shoes are sometimes interesting to study.

If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

LMAO! ThickStick4u, it would be a little hard to run into it face first with my head down, but any jarring of my head could loosen the retina again.

@IdaHotGuy05 Actually, it was a pain in the eye. LOL! No, I took my last final (100%, yay!) and I am done with Boise unless I land a job up there.

@jagwik2 I'm glad it wasn't worse but now I can't get a job as fast as I wanted. Will update after the next appointment.

Ok, eye is healing. It's making fluid again so it wasn't lifting again as the doctor thought at the appointment before last. Thank goodness. I'm not sure I could stand being stuck in the eye on either side of my iris again no matter how deep they put me under. Now it's just a matter of letting it finish healing and filling back up with fluid. It's kinda funky seeing the ground through an airbubble.

If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.
