a non-erotic halloween story

someone to watch over me

A friend, of a friend, of my moms, was up at church telling all about her hose needing to be blessed by a priest. My mom listened in, and told the lady that maybe I could help her. That's how I met Sharon and her family. Quite a few miles down route 51 south and down a road to the left. There sits a beautiful house that's been occupied by the same family for four generations. Three of the four generations lived there before Sharon moved back in, after her mom's death. She brought her family. Dave her husband all four , and others have experienced sounds in the house when it should have been quiet. That wasn't the real reason Sharon wanted my help,it was her youngest little girl. Three year old Becky had an unusual habit when she went to sleep. I showed up on the arranged day and time when Sharon was the only one home. she took me up to the little girls bedroom. It was a small room with one window, it had the family crib, a dresser, a very large old toy chest and the family heir-loom rocking chair. All crammed into the tiny room. The chair was ornate and had been hand crafted four generations ago, and given as a gift to great-grandma on the birth of her first . It had a lot of stories to tell, I'm sure. But none today. Sharon lifted the lid to the toy box and showed me a hand painted picture of Alice in Wonderland. it was age worn too, and the subject of our haunting. You see, great-grandma Beverly comes to see little Becky, and little Becky sees great-grandma. She doesn't like to sleep in her bed. Becky's been found many a night laying curled up on the toy box, pillow and blanket at hand.

When asked why she was sleeping on the toy box she said."Grandma likes it when I fall asleep on her lap. she sits on the old toy box and I lay in her lap as she hums me a song, and I go to sleep.” Well it seemed little Becky had herself an imaginary friend, or did she. I suggested they get a baby monitor system. Keep one on in Becky's room and one in the master bedroom. I also suggested to get a recorder to confirm any sounds they might hear, and hear sounds they did. They heard Becky's voice. then they heard another voice.

When they heard the second voice, they stopped getting ready for bed, and stopped in their tracks. Sharon began to cry. Her eyes filling with tears as memories of her childhood flooded her thoughts. the humming that they were listening to was a song her mother had hummed to her so many years ago as she crossed over into dreamland as she, sat on the old toy box. Brahms lullaby was softly floating from the speaker of the monitor. "Lullaby and goodnight,”Sharon sat down on the bed and just listened. Her husband dashed to Becky's bedroom, to see who was singing the song. As he rounded the corner into the room, he stopped dead in his tracks. The scene before him was confusing him. What he heard did not match what he saw. Fore there before him was his darling little girl sound asleep on the toy box. Her pillow was tucked under her head and her blanket wrapped snugly about her. She was alone in the room. Sharon sat there for a long minute after her husband left the room, and after the singing stopped. Then she got up and staggered down the hall. Dave was just standing in the bedroom doorway. He turned to her, his face pale, and drained of all color. She peaked into the room, and saw the same thing that her husband did. Confusion struck her too. That night Becky spent the night asleep between mommy and daddy, in the big bed. The next day Sharon called me and told me about the series of events that transpired the evening before. she invited me to their home for dinner that evening if i could make it. oh, i could make it OK. She asked me if i liked pirogies. I don't like them, I love them. It was a wonderfully prepared dinner, complete with some homemade Italian red wine. It turns out that the events of last night were not the first sounds they had heard. it was only the first time they had heard the gentle loving words of a sleepy-bye song. Now came my dilemma. How do I ask Becky the important questions only she could answer? I didn't want to call Pete, so iIcalled a reincarnation/hypnotist I knew then , and still know. He is one of the best in his field in the world. We spent more time then we should have on the phone. but he gave me the answers and technique to talk to little Becky. after I convinced Sharon and her husband no harm would come to Becky. They let Becky sleep in her own room after three nights of squishing her in their bed. no more singing had been heard for three nights. That's not to say that Becky slept in her bed, or that footsteps weren't still heard making their way down the hall. Sleep for Sharon, was becoming a more precious thing, due to lack of it. We set a date on which to meet next. I asked Sharon to gather all the family pictures that have aunts and grandmas in them, but to not let Becky see them.

The next Sunday we got back together. It was getting warmer and the early flowers were coming out. Becky was in a great mood. She wasn't sure what to make of me as mommy and daddy's new important friend. Sharon clued me in as to who was in what picture. then we invited Becky into the kitchen.

We began playing sort of a game. "I started sleeping on our couch when I was five. Do you have a favorite place to sleep?"

Becky was more then happy to tell me,"I like to sleep on grandma's lap, on the toy chest."
I asked her when she started doing this and she said. "Well it was back when we went around and got candy on Halloween. she comes to me sometimes. she's old."

“If you saw a picture of her could you show us? "yep" She said, with conviction. I spread the bunch of the photos Sharon had given me over the kitchen table. Sharon lifted Becky standing her on a chair to see the pictures. She looked them over for long minutes. Then she picked out a photo as I would pick out one of my mom.

"That's her, I know it." Becky yelled proudly, picking up the picture.

We sat there stunned for a moment. It wasn't a picture of her grandma. We told her she had done a great job picking out grandma's picture. She was lifted down and told to go watch the cartoon movie they had recorded on TV for her. Sharon came back and about fell into her chair. IT WASN"T Becky's grandma, it was Sharons. Over the next ten minutes I was told all that Sharon could remember about her grandma. then the movie was put on pause and we asked Becky about when grandma comes to see her. We all assured her, seeing grandma was OK as long as she didn't go outside. She told us how grandma just shows up sitting on the toy box with her arms open. She climbs out of bed with her blanket and pillow and falls asleep on grandma's lap. grandma sings her a song as she goes to sleep. then when she wakes-up, grandma's gone. Her telling of the events matched what we knew. I asked Sharon if she wanted me to get rid of grandma?

She said "No what's one more family member in the house, now that we know who it is." Becky saw grandma dozens of times over the next to years, and then she appeared less and less. Soon grandma was just a memory. The family begged me not to make it known to the public, and i have fulfilled my promise. You see, not all ghosts are bad.
