My Absence is in the Books

The only thing I do more than listening to music is reading; not movies, not writing, not eating, not sleeping, not sex, nothing; reading generally comes before anything else.

Over the holidays, along with the time spent on this forum, the movies I watch, and the traveling I’ve done, I found that my time spent reading had been reduced drastically. So finally I decided that enough is enough. Hence, my absence over the last few days.

I decided to get back to what I love best, so for this past weekend I spent most of my time finishing up the book I had started reading weeks ago, one of my favorite series called “The Codex Alera”, now on book 5 which is “Princep’s Fury.”

It’s very rare that I write about books; usually it’s about life, poetry music or movies; so much so that one would think I’m not into books. Most people, contrary to popular belief, still read books; most people, however, read books that appeal to their own taste and it’s very rare that someone read a book just because someone tells them it’s good.

But I will mention what I’m reading and even try to tell a little about it with the hope that I will have someone I can share my feelings with.

This “Codex Alera” is a six-part fantasy series, in the mode of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of The Ring” and George R.R. Martin’s “Song of Ice and Fire.” It’s the story of a boy’s rise from farmer’s apprentice (or so he believes) to Lord of the Realm in a ‘Romanic-type’ country/continent called Alera.

I was able to make the series last for six years reading one each year, mainly because I have so many other series to read. So, of course, I will be reading the last book sometime later this year.

I used to read any time I could. Sometimes a book a day.
I'll read anything, fact or fiction... almost.

I'm just not big on sci-fi or fantasy stuff.
It just can't hold my interest.

I never read or saw "the Lord Of The Rings".
The little bit I DID... sent me running!

I used to read a lot mostly now I'm confined to holidays. The last holiday I took I read 6 or 7 books over two weeks.

Ever read the Thomas Covenant Trilogy's by Stephen Donaldson I liked those. I use to read a lot of fantasy and sci fi and horror more so now its mostly fiction.

Lol! I read The Hobbit years ago, and bought a copy of The Lord of the Rings right after the first movie came out. I still have the book in pristine condition and, as much as I love Fantasy, I still haven't read it as yet.

I kind of wonder if I ever will.

My factual stuff I will read in the papers or the magazines, plus what I get from National Geographic but, other than that, I won't read facts or non-fiction, biographies, and stuff like that.

When I went back to college my reading volume went down. I only read during the Summer breaks and I would just go through everything.

Now I read at a much slower pace (I've kinda lost fate in my ability to recall some important facts considering that I'll read page one today and not see the 200th page until maybe 3-4 weeks later).

I mostly read Sci-fi, spy and detective stuff these days. Back in high school it was mostly Westerns and horror plus the regular Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Bobbsey Twins.

I haven't come across the Stephen Donaldson series before. I'll go looking for it, see how I feel!
