"Friends Only" Photos - Private Or Not?

I've been considering putting some face pictures in a photo album for "friends only". After all, what could go wrong since the site will keep those pictures private just between me and my friends.

I've heard some stories about the privacy setting not always working right. And of course site management has gone and fixed that right away. I've gone and done all the recommended things like turning off activity sharing of when I upload a new photo, etc. And I've done a little experiment.

At a friend's request I re-uploaded a video a few weeks ago. My activity preference is set to not share when I've uploaded a video. That video got 835 views in a week. The videos aren't private and can be seen by anyone who can view my profile. Yet I didn't have 835 profile views during that week. Or even 100 though there were more than the usual few. I converted one of my photo albums to "friends only" and named it just that. Since it had been an open album before all the pictures had been viewed by others in the past. I deleted some or moved them to other albums. Then I uploaded a new picture to the friends only album. The same one I used for this week's HNW bonus post. Since then it's gotten one view. Which gives me confidence that it's relatively safe to put pictures there and assume they really can only be seen by my friends.

So I've put two new pictures there, a couple from the series I took for Naughty Librarian that I hadn't posted before. Cropped to show my head and face, too. They've been there a couple of days and it looks like they really are private. I'm not seeing the number of views that the videos and the pictures in other albums get. I'll do one more experiment. I'll upload three more pictures. One to Friends Only and one to a public album and one to my profile album. Then I'll see how the view counts compare after a few days. If the private album seems truly private then I'll leave the pictures there, maybe add some more. Of course, a low view count doesn't guarantee that it's only my friends viewing them But it is a good sign. Unless someone who's not in my friends network comments on or likes one of them!

Thanks to those who have left comments and who have liked my pictures and videos. I don't always get notifications when comments are left there. (Not that that's a glitch or anything.) I do appreciate them when I find them.

 That is one really big problem here. You never know when making something private really works. I saw your pictures and like them.

That is the problem. I've listened to what others have said and taken all the advice on how to make it work right. And so far it seems to be working right. There is an issue of activity notifications which don't seem to realize when pictures are uploaded to private albums. That's why I've turned mine off. Which is also why I was so surprised to see 835 views of the video.

 I posted on that same issue a while ago. Thanks for reminding me to go back and check for views and comments on my private album. My face is NOT showing there. I don't trust these jerks.

Yes, I remember what you'd posted about it. That's when I went and turned off the activity notices. So far it seems to be keeping my "Friends Only" photos private but I know I need to let it go for a week or so before I can really see for sure. And even after that I'll probably still monitor it, just in case.

 I see you set that you don't want when you add photo to show on 'My activities' on your profile page as I don't see any show,only blog posting mostly. So you should not be getting a lot of view other then you network friend even if they might check more then once time.
The 4 albums that are visible to me are show on the screen shot. Just hope the screen shot show.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, that's the way it's supposed to work. If the "My Activities" would ignore photos uploaded to private albums I'd turn notification on for photos. But it broadcasts those to the entire Gay Hookup Zone community and that creates a hole in the privacy setting. I expect the number of views to stay low for all my pictures. But I expected that for the video and I don't understand how it got hundreds of views since I have activity notices for videos turned off too. Not that I mind. It's not a naughty video and I knew I was posting it in a public place.
