A short lesson in Grammar

A blog I wrote on MySpace February 12, 2009 which I have carried over to Facebook March 9, 2012. And now am bringing to Gay Hookup Zone.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time on MySpace. I have viewed profiles, read blogs, corresponded with people and so forth. I must say that I am astounded by how many people butcher their written thoughts with improper grammar, poor spelling and a complete lack of punctuation.


I realize that I can be an insufferable know-it-all and I know that I am quite the perfectionist (I am a Virgo, after all) but it isn’t rocket science. I grew up in Joplin, Missouri, went to public school and took the same Comm Arts classes as everyone else.


Is it really so difficult to take a few extra moments to properly construct a complete sentence? My eleven year old can do it so why can’t the average adult? I’ve even taken the time to provide some examples of the correct usage of what seem to be the most misused words in our language.


Your – I looked at your profile.
You’re – I see you’re online.
See the difference? The word “your” is used to show possession. The word “you’re” is used as a contraction for the words you and are.


There – I see there are other people online as well.
Their – You can look at their profiles.
They’re – Maybe they’re online now.
Again there is a difference. The word “there” shows place. The word “their” shows possession. The word “there” is a contraction of the words they and are.


To – You should go to the profile.
Two – Maybe they have two profiles.
Too – you can too.
The differences? The word “to” is a preposition which indicates a relationship between the subjects in a sentence. The word “two” is a number which works as an adjective to show quantity. The word “too” means also or as well.


Were – Were you online today?
We’re – We’re online right now.
Where – Where did you look?
These differences? The word “were” is a past progressive form of the verb to be. The word “we’re” is a contraction of the words we and are. The word “where” is an adverb questioning in what place.


And speaking of adverbs they seem to be the most misused of all. Words such as bad or quick being used instead of badly or quickly.
CORRECT: I miss him badly.
NOT: I miss him bad.
CORRECT: I ran as quickly as a rabbit.
NOT: I ran as quick as a rabbit.


But I think the worst one of all is when someone uses the word good in place of well.
CORRECT: I don’t feel well.
NOT: I don’t feel good.


See? I really it isn’t that difficult!!!

 Good luck on your crusade.

I agree though grammar and spelling, people will not use the spellchecker, show how lazy people have come.

Also text speech, do full words hurt the fingers when typed.

 Great post. You touched on some major grammatical sins and there are more

 I quite agree. Some of the grammar I've seen is atrocious! I'll take several minutes trying to get it right. I'll even look up words to make sure I've got them spelled right. If I'm on my phone or tablet, it'll at least give me spelling suggestions.
I've seen some posts that look like they are trying to write the way they talk. Kind of reminds me of the way Mark Twain wrote stuff like Huck Finn, except I keep wishing I had my decoder ring so I can decipher it.
Personally, I think people have gotten lazy.
At least I know now that I'm not the only one with this pet peeve.
