ISLE OF THE CURSED:

Evan felt a hand on his forehead. He tried blinking but couldn’t. ‘Find your finger tips’ he ordered himself. Cold and darkness surrounded him, uncomfortable in the knowledge that the darkness was with him. He knew he had done something to upset someone but everything was vague. As if he had forgotten what had happened. He could feel the temperature in the room. It was very very cold. He tried to draw the quilt over his head but the quilt was not his. Feathers? Soft, dense feathers or fur, whatever it was he felt it covering him. He opened his eyes slowly as if scared he would break something delicate. A faint light was coming from a corner. Fine, it was his room. The owner of those wings had his head in her lap. Evan gasped, "Rihette…." Everything came rushing to him. They had an argument… about some angel of vitality or something. And he did not want to believe in her dreams. Another thing flew into his mind, he was going to become the Devil. But there was too much to be done before that, he had to find the curse and the cursed. Pain shot from the back of his head as he winced in pain and tried to ball his fists. That resulted in waking Rihette up. She hurriedly changed her position to make him more comfortable. Laying his head on the pillow she made her wings disappear.

"Rihette… are you there?"

"Yeah." Holding back the thousands of words she had thought of telling him when he would wake up she gulped down tears, for the unknown, for the love she could have lost.

He rolled her fingers and held her hand in his.

Rihette whimpered, "I’m sorry. I…"

"Shh…" Evan said closing his eyes again, "it’s alright. We’ll have to talk after dinner. I want to sleep…."

Without another word he fell asleep. Rihette perched on the window sill, her usual spot with one leg dangling down. The moon light streamed in as she pulled a curtain back. It made her look pale and tired. She had to wait. Say sorry. Razek was right, drifting away from each other could only cause more trouble. Too many unanswered questions were exhausting her. What was the curse? Who were the cursed? How were Evan and herself related as archangels? Where did Razek go? How were they to explain Evan’s sudden condition to his uncle? What would happen once he would be coronated?

Evan was aware of his surroundings. He had to think about what he would tell Rihette and so had made up a reason to talk after dinner He looked through barely open eyes. Poor thing. She sat with her head buried in her knees, tears rolling of that lovely face he had longed to see a smile on. After sometime, Rihette stood up and walked toward him, he was still asleep. She placed a hand on his forehead to read his dreams but all she found was a sensation of guilt and in that moment she knew he was awake, all that while!

"EVAN DORAN!" she was smiling and crying trying to beat every inch of Evan’s body black and blue. He was laughing softly and rolled to the other side.

"Wo…wha… ow, man! That hurt!" He yelled as Rihette swiftly kicked him out of the bed and thrashed him with cushions. "I’m sorry! I’m sorry. I was awake… hey, hey hang on!"

After what seemed like an hour of convincing her to stop, he settled on a chair next to the window sill. She sat there, her face streaked with tears. But she wasn’t crying. "Moron! I should have dumped you the first day itself."

Evan grinned, ok he was beaten up but not as badly as Rihette would have liked. More than relieved, Rihette playfully kicked his knee from her perch. He was still looking weak but nevertheless, she was glad he had forgiven her. "You know, your feathers are really soft…."Evan complimented. She blushed a bit and said, "So were yours."

Evan shrugged indicating that he didn’t have much of an idea about their past. Rihette grimaced and said, "Razek came visiting for a few seconds, you’ll probably remember everything once your coronation is over. So don’t break your head with that."

Evan nodded as they heard the approaching footsteps of a raven. Probably to announce dinner. Whenever he was late to dinner, his uncle would call for him. They expected a knock on the door which came a second later. Dark black robes, piercing gaze, though none could see their eyes, it made Rihette shudder. She became slightly more cautious in spite of knowing that they couldn’t see her. Evan nodded curtly and stood up to leave for dinner. Rihette pulled out a plate of Chinese noodles and settled on the table, her legs dangling while Evan straightened his back and looked at his uncle. He was in his devil form, he had been drinking, he could tell from his attitude. Evan started on his own food, like a prince and not a devil. He finished earlier than his uncle, wished him good night and started leaving. His uncle grunted back to acknowledge Evan’s greeting and continued to chomp away hungrily, greedily, devilishly. He had allowed the devil to take hold of him. Wondering about how he managed to bring himself back to his normal humane self, Evan sat in his library while Rihette fell settled comfortably on one of the couches in there. Evan pulled open the curtains. The faint moonlight streamed in like a waterfall, the darkness shrank away to a corner. Settling in one of the high- backed chairs, he flipped open the page of a brand new book. Rihette who was looking at his frame in the moonlight, admiring his strength, his will power, raised a questioning eyebrow. From a distance of a meter, he whispered, "It’s the list of curses prepared by a fellow devil…."

Rihette said softly, "You are not a devil Evan, please try to believe me. Why don’t you understand?"

Evan squeezed his eyes shut and said pleadingly, "Please, my love. Give me time- not to believe you but to understand my situation."

Rihette held back a sob and once again retreated to the sanctuary she had found in a hard bound book. It was a book about how the devils had defeated the wizards and witches. That was probably an epic, God wasn’t mentioned there. Nor was the castle in which they were living. A different earth was described with vampires and gargoyles, where shadows and time never corresponded and were trained in the art of demon slaying. Nothing was mentioned about the pyramids of Egypt. As a matter of fact, the continents were not the same, the places were not the same. It was a different world. She turned the page…

The only portal between our world and the mortal world stands open during times when the five chiefs would meet. Bringing their forces together, requesting them to open that gate, sacrificing something of equal value in return will open the portal. And anyone who gains access to the portal once shall be allowed entry as many times as he wants.

Rihette read through frantically trying to find out which species did the five chiefs belong to. By the end of four hours Rihette had the answer with an aching back and a thirsty throat. The five wanted individuals were belonging to five different species but who they were was not mentioned. The first of the five was a sorcerer, the second was an archangel, (that would be easy, she could figure it out with a bit of help from the heavens), next was the prophet- a human with knowledge to all possible worlds but with limited words, fourth was a spectre and the last one was the most powerful devil. To find these people… a coronation party…. A secret meeting…. They agree and the portal is opened. Then? Then what? What lay beyond that gate? Why would Evan even want to go there? She stood up to get rid off the ctiffness when she noticed Evan was not in his seat. She tried calling out to him, no reply, she followed the voices coming from the main hall downstairs. Three people were talking. One of them was surely Evan….

"My lord… I assure you of the devastation this can bring upon you. The imbalance, the uncertainty. Believe me…"

"But uncle how is that possible when I haven’t seen the book myself, I do not know its position."

The devil’s throaty voice floated through the corridor where she stood, "I trust you my lad, you cannot find the book if you know about it. That is why everyone here is educated about the ‘Isle of the Cursed’ the place where all cursed souls are sent to be tormented with their sins till the end of eternity…. Call for the black raven. I suspect the presence of an enemy…."

Evan felt the color drain from his face, "Uncle… who is your enemy?"

"Archangels on a mission sent from heaven, to balance out the curses, to release the souls from the Isle of the Cursed…."

Rihette gasped as she realized what that sentence implied. Evan willed Rihette to disappear, from the face of Earth before the most elite and skilled raven set out in search of her.

Rihette and Evan argue and Razek reappears for a few seconds, will Rihette and Evan's relation survive arguments? 'Rihette entwined her fingers with his. His hands were cold and clammy. She kept mum, and allowed him to speak as she heard his heart out. Maybe she could find out more about him.' Sorry for the delay

10. MIFFED FEELINGS:

"What are you talking about? I… I didn’t get you!" Evan said in exasperated tones.
Rihette shook her head and closing her eyes fell back on the bed. He raised an eyebrow, asking permission to sit next to her. She shifted a bit and he sat on the bed’s edge. Sometimes, sometimes only, she used to become aware of her brief past in which she fell in love with him in college. That strange feeling- how vulnerable she had been, how shy she was when she was talking about him to someone… probably her mother or sister, she didn’t remember. It was unbelievable- how easily she could manage with him- in a car, in his room, in any place she would never have been earlier. How long had she known him? What was their bond?

"Hellllloooo! ARE YOU LISTENING…" Evan was screaming. Rihette snapped out of her thoughts and looked here and there. She felt a painful sensation on her wrist. She looked down, Evan was gripping it angrily. Rihette wrestled her hand out of his tight grip and said, "I’m listening! Stop shrieking! What’s the matter?"

"Why did you say it was me in your dream? Why did you say I was your partner?"

"Evan, try to understand… it was a dream. And believe me, the dreams of an archangel don’t lie."

Evan said holding his head, "I don’t understand anything. ANYTHING at all!. What’s wrong with me?" His hands were shaking as he looked at both his palms, Rihette worriedly sat up. Evan was letting out steam… but it wasn’t usually like this. Something in his mind was troubling him.

"First I wake up one fine morning to see myself living in this huge place without remembering anything but death…"

Rihette entwined her fingers with his. His hands were cold and clammy. She kept mum, and allowed him to speak as she listened his heart out. Maybe she could find out more about him.

"Then my uncle tells me he made the memory people had of me is gone, just the same that was done to me. I know I’ve some powers but I’ve no idea how to use them. He tells me he can teach me but I just end getting beaten up! What rule is that?"

Rihette was by now on her feet coaxing him to sit down comfortably… "Evan relax… you’re hurting yourself. I’m with you, you know that. Keep talking it’ll help you lessen your load."

Evan went on in a shaky voice, "Then I start going to college, there I am asked to maintain out of contact with all humans. One day I go against him and befriend a girl who dashed into me," Rihette expected a smile but he showed no specific reaction continuing his life’s story, "I know she likes me and I like her. The ravens start hounding me for no matter and they come to know I’m in love with her. I hadn’t even told it to her! Then because my uncle forces me I’ve to break all contacts with her. I obeyed him, almost I agree but still he sets fire to that girl’s house with her and her mother in it and the two of them perish to death, screaming in front of me."

Rihette said softly, "Its alright, it wasn’t your fault. Why are you referring to me as her?"

"You are different. She was shy and realistic and she was the one confused there, not me. She was the vulnerable one not me. You wouldn’t know… you just won’t understand…"

Rihette’s eyebrows furrowed and she spat in a way she hadn’t meant, "You mean, I don’t know how open to all elements you are and of course… I’m not realistic now then am I?"

Evan looked at her, why was she distancing herself from him? Why was she talking that way? Evan said raising his voice, "It’s not that Rihette. I didn’t mean to hurt you…"

Rihette continued looking at him crossly, "Fine… continue!"

She heard him but was looking hurt and that confused Evan even more, "Then I feel depressed and everything but you show up saying you are back into my life as an archangel. Then comes Razek another angel. Won’t you be confused if you would be in my position?"

Rihette didn’t say anything and Evan answered the silence, "See… your silence speaks for itself. I was confused, shocked, happy and terrified at the same time. I’m not used to emotions and from the day I met you, I’ve been swimming in emotions. I’ve been going crazy just thinking how lucky people are to born- live without knowing anything of this sort and finally die. If everybody has to become an angel or devil after death it is not worth living…. That is what I believe… I wish to die and yet I’m mercilessly immortal, stuck as the crown prince of a devil’s curse. One which is misbalancing the rules and laws of living. And all of a sudden, fresh out of a dream you tell me I’m your partner, some crap about an angel of… what was that… ah! Angel of vitality! You saw me in your dream which fanatically happens to not be a lie."

Rihette’s anger was gone, she had been concentrating on what he had to say. Now, her eyes beseeched him she spoke pleadingly, "I was not lying, all I say is everything I’m doing, I’m doing it because you need me… I too am living after death for you. why don’t this get into your head?"

Evan said harshly, "Yeah! And you had no business of your own… no reason other than me to come down here and help a sickly guy like me…. I don’t believe what you are telling me…"

Rihette felt a strange feeling she hadn’t felt in a long time- anger, hatred, rage all rolled into one. She bluttered out, "I didn’t ask you to believe me…"

Evan’s peripheral vision turned grey for a moment and then he said in a whisper, "Rihette, I don’t think you should be here."

Rihette turned her back and said, "I didn’t ask you to order me around… honestly, that part about me being unrealistic! Oh please! It hurt me, totally! But would you understand?"

Evan said so softly that Rihette couldn’t catch what he said, "…sorry, it is my worst memory…"

She turned around hearing the frailness in his voice. Even before she could help him, he slipped from the bed, landing on the carpet with a hand stretched out.

"EVAN! No… don’t do this to me." She was on her knees next to him wiping the sweat off his forehead. "Listen Evan… I can’t call for help… no one can hear me," she shook his shoulder and yelled, "Don’t do this to me. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry."

She tried listening to his heartbeat, it was almost inaudible. She felt a lump in her throat as tears fell off her eyes. She stood up and turned the air conditioner’s knob to its fullest.

A second later, Razek had appeared next to Evan’s body and gently laid him on the bed. He looked less radiant than usual but was nevertheless there. She ran to him and started, "Where have you been? I was informed that you were called. Please help me… it was a small argument, nothing much, please…." She started crying as Razek brushed off her tears. She looked in his eyes, somehow he understood what was going on.

"Rihette, he is your soul mate… you both drift away from each other and that’s the end of your powers. Make him understand your dreams and once he becomes the Devil, once he gets the throne everything will come rushing to him, he’ll change drastically but you have to let him know it’s alright. He will change as drastically as you did. He will answer your queries, all of them." His feathery wings started appearing as his form started disappearing.

"Razek wait… when is his coronation?"

She only heard him say the answer cause he was completely gone, "In a week’s time. You two are our last hope."

Sobbing she walked over to the bed looked at Evan, at his deathly still palms which had been shivering like crazy a few minutes back. Washing her face and dampening her hair in a quickie, she walked over to the bed. Thinking about all that she had to tell him before his coronation, she lifted his head in her lap and stroked it softly not knowing whether or not he would keep loving her after waking up…

9. AN ARCHANGEL’S DREAMS:

Rihette shook Evan’s shoulder roughly, "Wake up! Please Evan…"

He stirred a bit and then said in a ragged whisper, "Let them take me… I’ll be fine." She nodded, all sorts of mad thoughts washing her. Evan allowed the ravens to open the door for him. Not waiting for Rihette, he slipped into the darkness, literally disappearing with it; a few ravens carrying his stuff upstairs. Rihette walked down the path leading to the palace like place. Her heart sank when she saw the devil talking to Evan. He was sitting with his hands in his lap. Rihette looked at the wall clock, it was almost seven, and she could go to sleep soon. Gulping down her fear, she brushed a hand over Evan’s gelled hair and said, "I’ll wait upstairs… see ya later."

Evan nodded and continued talking to his uncle- the devil. Rihette knew she had placed a contact charm on Evan. If anyone would touch him, she would automatically be next to him. It was one of the most practiced tricks she knew.

Rihette flumped into the couch in Evan’s room. She wondered how Evan must have felt when she first met him; as an archangel and as the human. Thinking about that she fell asleep. Not knowing that her dreams were guided by her thoughts… or that a special someone had picked her up and bundled her in a soft blanket on the equally cosy bed.

Evan took one glance at the sleeping angel he had wanted to talk to, and folded his knees to fit in the couch as he too fell asleep.

Rihette saw herself riding a unicorn (unicorn…?) She could feel the rain, but there was no rain. Someone was talking to her, "Even I could have done that! Not like you were worth it or something… still, they should have called me…."

She saw herself saying, "What makes you think you of all angels can talk to me like that?"

The same person replied, "I have my reasons… you like it or not." Saying that he went away. She shrugged and continued riding into the rain. She reached a temple like place and jumped down. It was then that she noticed her more than odd attire- a knee length boot of some exotically soft material, a velvety black full sleeved dress which was nothing short of a military fancy dress. She felt the weight of an arrow carrier on her back. Clutching an arrows end, she pulled it out. Immediately a light but sizeable bow materialized in her other hand. She held the bow straight and shot one single arrow towards a tree. Rihette was amazed to see herself shoot like that. She raced to the tree to see a baby angel chomping on an apple. Her arrow lay next to the baby. He was cute… she said instinctively, "How did you get that apple?"

Stuttering in babyish tones he said, "An angel shot it down for me…"

Laughing aloud she asked the baby, "What is your name?"

But the baby was no longer there, instead she found herself standing in the Reflection’s end. A king sat there over a throne made of sand over a sea. She immediately knew who He was- The Creator. She bowed low and said after rising up, "I have finished my mission... do you have anything for me?"

"How are you today, angel of mortality…"

She heard the door open just then. The same man walked in. He looked excruciatingly familiar, black hair, extremely well built. That sharp nose, steady chin, handsome mandible…. Hey stop! She thought, you are in front of the Creator… leave him to imagination for later.

"Ah! There you are my , you were able to overcome your ego… at last let me add. Now then my dear archangels… let me leave this to you both… listen to him… that is what I have for you."

Throwing a very spiteful look at the man, she bowed respectfully, "I’ll do as you want me to… with whomever you want me to go with."

As they were leaving the place, the King yelled form his slowly sinking throne, "Hark! Kindly introduce yourselves before going on."

Rihette saw herself turn to the man, continuously noticing his features, which she hadn’t thought of before. He said, "I’m the archangel of vitality, the leader of all archangels."

Rihette said a smile wishing to play on her lips but silenced by the hatred she felt for that man, "I too am an archangel and no one leads me…"

"I have no rule over you because you are the archangel of transience; the only one that has control over humanity and death; my only challenge."

She felt pride surge through her. So! She was the archangel of transience. She concentrated on the scene in front of her eyes once again, "What makes you say that?"

He laughed, perfect white teeth shone in the morning light. She felt like touching his cheek but held herself back. What was happening to her? Had she gone mad? No… she was probably falling in what humanity called love; for the first time. Who was this guy?

She saw herself see many scenes in a flash back slowly.

She was arguing with her partner- the archangel of vitality. He had longer hair, they were in some garden and a fair was going on… (Oh! The people could not see them). Next she saw them back to back fighting black smoky warriors- sadly familiar. She saw the same ground empty. There was lots of blood around them. It was their blood mingling in the mud with the broken arrows and pieces of strange metal weapons lying around. She gazed at the man she had fallen in love with. It couldn’t have been any other person. Her heart skipped a beat as she walked closer to get a better look. The archangel sighed as he held the lifeless body of his partner. He placed a platinum sword over her body and saw the blood cover it fully, deeply, hungrily. Rihette looked on wide eyed… as she saw him bring her back from eminent death by using his powers. She saw them stand before the same God and swear to do all they could to abolish the name of the Devil who had the power to…

"Rihette! Rihette?" Evan was yelling his head out. Rihette heaved a sigh and said with her eyes closed, "What’s the matter with you? I was having such a nice dream…." She bolted out of bed the next second and whispered as if shaken to the core, "It was you, wasn’t it? You were my partner… remember? The angel of vitality?"

8. REVELATION

Evan sat on the chair opposite the invisible Rihette. She looked spaced out for some reason. Evan quietly sipped the last of his orange juice, there was extra sugar in that, he could tell that from the taste. Evan felt Rihette’s hand slip into his. How odd…- Evan thought. She was not visible to any person in the world but was so solidly real to him. He had liked her since the day she had bumped into him. He had liked her way of talking, the way her emotions showed how much ever she tried to conceal them. He was one of the many who could tell what was troubling her and what made her feel good. Like right now, his mood was troubling her, as was Razek’s absence.

"You worried about Razek?"

Rihette bent her head down and gazed outside.

"Rihette, talk to me, I might be able to help."

She said in a disappointed voice, "Razek was called for some other errand. We archangels can transmit messages like Professor X of X- men…"

Talking about their common interests brought a smile to her lips. She thought for a few seconds and then said, "How about watching a movie tonight. None of us are in good spirits today."

Evan nodded his head, his hair settled comfortably around his neck, "Yeah, I guess you are right. You wouldn’t have even dreamt of watching a movie with me or going to the mall with me had you been alive. Sometimes I can’t believe I have you with me, 24 by 7…"

Rihette gave him an angry look, a smile played on her lips, "Oooh! Please, I certainly would have dreamt of going out with you but the sad thing is that I can’t show anybody that I’m in a skewed way going out with you. Why should I even bother? You like me dead! Save the cruel world, God!"

Evan wanted to start an argument about her debating skills but caught his tongue just in time. The tension lifted willingly as he placed a shopping bag inside the rear seat, which Razek had occupied a few hours ago. He didn’t know whether she remembered her life or not. She hadn’t remembered Hikari yet.

"Who is Hikari? Your girlfriend?"

"Wh… what? How could you…?"

Rihette smiled and said, "I’m an archangel Evan. I can read minds and protect them from being read. Hope you understand."

Evan realized that Rihette had been protecting his thoughts from reaching the devil. He said softly as they walked into the parking lot, "She was someone you liked, someone who was emotionally dead when she came to know about your death. She attended counseling sessions with me back at the school. Uh… do you remember your life here?"

She said instinctively, "Only the part concerning you. I came to help you. It was my mission. Do you?"

"Do you what?"

"Evan, do you remember your past lives?"

"What are you talking about? Past lives"

Rihette sighed and shook her head.

"I’ll see you in your room Evan, I’ll leave for now, I want to be left alone for a while…."

"But…" he caught her hand just as she started disappearing. Rihette raised an eyebrow in spite of her progressively blushing cheeks. Evan replied to her unasked question, "Yes Rihette, I want you to stay. I want you to feel the same cool breeze I feel when I sit with the windows down, I want you to see the darkening skies. I am the ruler of the darkness, I wanted to show you its beauty, something which couldn’t beat your heart’s beauty…"

Rihette now crimson in color because of the handsome lines used, said stuttering, "Al… alright, you got me, Evan. Let’s go home. I have a feeling the days excitement is not over yet. And yeah! I’ve to tell you something tonight. Communication skills…."

Evan heard her giggle as they drove out of the parking lot. Part of Rihette’s mission was to bring back Evan’s memories as the archangel and as the human he was before becoming the devil’s heir…. The time to reveal truths was nearing. It was she who needed preparing to do and an opportunity, to tell him his identity; guide him along the path of revelation…. She wondered if he would get his memories back once the coronation was over.

Evan drove slowly, carefully. His eyes were heavy and the only thing that kept him on was the pull he felt towards his room because of the darkness. Sighing, he swerved away from a bus and turned into his lane. Rihette slumbered quietly in her seat. He didn’t want to go inside the house, see his uncle’s face. Why was everything so confusing? Untamed anger made him bang the steering wheel loudly.

Rihette caught her breath and woke up, "Evan! Are you all right?"

Her voice was still sleepy. He shook his head and saw tears fall in his lap. What now? He was crying in front of Rihette- for no particular reason. He let his head fall on the steering wheel and faced away from Rihette. Why? Of all times why now? He’d met Rihette just a few hours ago. He tried to control his tears but then they were uncontrolled things. He himself had seen it proved many times.

Rihette felt helpless for perhaps the first time since she had become an angel. It felt queer and somehow unreasonable. She placed her hand over his arm, and felt his shoulder muscles tighten. "Evan I don’t want to force your thoughts out of your mind. That way I won’t be lightening your load. Talk to me Evan. You know I can’t tell anyone…"

Evan turned to her and said, his eyes glistening, "It’s not that you can’t tell anyone; I know you won’t tell anyone."

"You don’t have to be insecure about me, you know our relationship is at an equal level from both our side."

"It isn’t that equal, considering you are alive and I’m dead…."

Rihette said after some time, "But we are still both archangels."

Evan felt his heart beat skip as he concentrated on the quiet Rihette had caused. She said, considering the silence as an indication to go on, "Evan could we go for a walk… please?"

Evan said huffily, "I don’t feel so good..."

"What’s wrong, Evan?"

He replied in a whisper, "I think I’m going for a black out…"

All of a sudden he started screaming as if in pain. He crushed Rihette’s hand so bad she pursed her lips from yelling. She tried to quieten him down, but in vain. Before his uncle could arrive she rolled the windows closed. She turned to the other side, to roll up her window but was shocked to see a dozen ravens surrounding their car….

RAZEK'S CLANGER

"Rihette, could you please stop cursing him?" Evan asked as he walked back to his room. Rihette made a face and continued cursing the devil in a low voice. Rihette was freaking out for no reason. Evan wondered at her confidence, it had improved drastically. He looked around his room, it seemed brighter than usual. A raven stood in the corner of his room. Evan froze, what if the raven had heard him talking to Rihette?

"What do you want?" Evan asked him. The raven’s slit like eyes scanned the area behind him. Evan tried to walk confidently towards the raven, he thought of his assegai and became more confident- "Answer me…"

The raven focused on Evan and said in a hoarse voice- "The master wishes you a good day and sends his compliments…"

So saying he placed a tray covered in silk and left in a whiff of dark smoke.

Rihette took her perch on the window light. The sun felt good on her skin. She knew the devil would have sent goodies for Evan’s day out. What was he? Human to Evan and devil to the rest of the world?

She couldn’t even lift the burden on Evan’s shoulder by telling him that he was an archangel and not a devil. After his coronation, Evan would have to start looking for the curse he was going to handle, then find the cursed people and…

"Hey! You coming or not?" Evan asked as he jingled the car keys in his hands. Rihette felt excited all of a sudden… it was going to be her first date with him. ‘Oh!’ thought Rihette as she recalled that they both had known each other from a very long time. First date!
--

Rihette was thinking about how they would find the curse and the cursed… when she heard a familiar voice.

"Rihette! Remember me?"

Rihette knew it was Razek before turning. He looked ready to go out. Hey, he looked good in those blue jeans and he had done something to his hair… GEL! Razek had actually applied gel on his hair…?

Rihette let the confusion guide her into the passenger seat on the driver’s side. She heard the back door open and then shut. Rihette could see her ‘first date’ go down the drain, triple date you could call it!

Evan had this strange look on his face, he shook his head, did something with a finger in his eye and glared at Razek.

The strangeness or may I put it, the awkwardness of finding a total stranger inside his car released Evan when he blustered out, "What the Hell do you think you are doing in here? Who are you?"

Razek looked at Rihette a bit scared of the way Evan scolded him, "Didn’t you tell him Rihette?"

Rihette looked back guiltily and spoke, "I… I had no idea he would be able to see you Razek, I’m honestly sorry."

Evan looked from Rihette to Razek. Utter confusion enjoying a disco in his head. He opened his mouth a few times but he just didn’t know what to say!

"Now then Razek, don’t be mad, let me introduce you to each other…"

Easier said than done.

"Razek! Who are you?" pointing to Razek’s softly rustling wings Evan said with curiosity, "Or what are you?"

"The same thing that she is…" Razek said stubbornly.

Evan then turned towards Rihette and said, "Who is he? A hunk you caught from the other world?"

Rihette sighed in exasperation and yelled at both of them, "Let me explain, please!"

They looked daggers at each other as Rihette said unnerved, "Evan, this is Razek- a guardian angel who guided me to choose the correct path after I died in this world and Razek… listen here man please! This is Evan Doran… the other arch… I mean the devil’s heir."

Rihette felt the guilt burden her happiness. There was nothing she could do about it. Razek stared at Rihette. He had obviously understood what she had meant to say. Evan appeared perplexed, unable to decipher what was going on.

Rihette gazed off into the horizon wondering what it was when they had met as archangels. Why was it so confusing? It was hard to believe that she was alive (alright, indirectly though), she could still be with Evan. The words Razek and Evan were shouting at each other bounced off. She waited for her memories as an archangel to come back. That way it would be easier to understand Evan too. She returned to the real world in which two idiots were squabbling. She massaged her temples, they throbbed because of the commotion.

Evan turned to her with concern scattered over his face, "What is it?"

Rihette shook her head and said, "You two. Your argument was getting on my nerves."

"He should understand why my presence is important…" Razek raged.

"Razek, understand that some things are best left unchanged…"

"Why do you always support him?" Razek pointed an accusing finger at Evan and glowered.

"Because I… well…I think I…"

"Alright I heard you!" Razek said as Evan sat there hoping Rihette would say ‘I love him….’ Things don’t always go as planned. Who would know that better than Evan would?

Rihette let her head fall back on the cushion as Evan slammed against the accelerator and sped off towards the shop. First Date!

Rihette was feeling exhausted, somehow all her excitement for the shopping mall had slipped out of the window. Evan noticed her mood from the side of his eye. Razek looked outside, still sulky. Shrugging, Evan took his hand off the gear and placed it gently on Rihette’s hand. She turned her palm in his hand and held on. He was glad she was still with him. Razek! That idiot.

"Ahem…"

‘No reply from either of them’ Razek noted.

He made a coughing sound glaring at Evan’s hand clutching Rihette’s hand. "Ah… umm…"

Evan whispered quietly but the dislike still in his voice, "Hey you dork, she is asleep. Keep quiet for some time."

Razek felt sorry for having doubted Rihette of ignoring her guardian. He apologized to Evan to cope up for his guilt, "Sorry pal! I had no idea. Sorry!"

Evan nodded, as he turned left without changing the gear. Sometimes he felt as though he could not let go of Rihette. So fragile, so vulnerable…. She was more to him than his own sorry life. She was what made it meaningful now. He waited for a minute or two and then said through Rihette’s hair and into her ear, "Hey Rihette! We’re at the mall. You want to catch some sleep or want to come with me?"

Rihette would have wanted to stay in the car but Evan’s safety was a priority, as were her feelings!

Razek was roaming around the mall; checking for ravens that might have followed Evan. Whom was he taking care of anyways? Rihette or Evan?

Evan kept his hand in touch with Rihette’s. Something made him feel insecure about her. Hadn’t she come down all the way from heaven to help me with my mission? What was my mission? Was that a Raven I saw just then? Why is that other guy Razek here? Where is he now? Why does it feel like something is stabbing my occipital area?

Rihette stopped when she felt the connection between Evan and herself break. She turned; her brown hair fell in front of her eyes. Evan was walking rapidly towards the seats outside the ’s ground. Rihette rushed to him and said breathlessly, "Evan… are you alright?"

"Yeah, absolutely. Give me a minute."

Rihette looked at him, his hair fell gently over his shoulders as he shook his head to put it out of his face.

He said after a few minutes, "I guess I could use a hair cut…"

Before Rihette could will her words back, she heard herself say, "No Don’t!"

"Why?" Evan was smirking and it made Rihette blush.

"Cause I like it the way it is. I mean, go ahead style it but don’t trim it short."

After a few minutes of pestering Rihette gave up on asking what made him run to the seat like that they started walking through the mall. A movie was up, the food court displayed it’s mouth watering delights behind the glass. Rihette felt the connection between her and Evan waver once again. She looked around, Evan was buying tickets for food.

"Uh! Why do you need two food passes?" asked the young man behind the counter.

Evan remembered that to all others he was alone. His appetite went down the ditch as he settled for an orange juice. Rihette held his hand and said, "Is something the matter?"

Evan shook his head and they continued walking. He was feeling guilty for some reason. Where was Razek? Had the devil sent Ravens behind him again? Something felt out of place, what, he didn’t know!

Razek gazed outside the jeans department. He felt a bit angry with Rihette and all the more with Evan. Who was he to interrupt his mission with Rihette? Well, he was the main archangel. Why did he have to lose his memory like that? Why in heaven did he ask Rihette to make him her guardian in the first place? God, he hoped, would answer all that. Razek regretted saying that he saw the mall dissolve and he knew he was returning to the Reflection’s End….

THE BRIGHTNESS TODAY…

Evan continued looking at the sun. It had no effect on him, not the slightest flinch. Rihette made a small sound, "Ahem…"

"I told you, leave me alone. I gave you my reasons. Please… it’s a beg."

Evan felt tears gather in his eyes. His dry throat hurt. A soft light spread in the room as Rihette walked around the bed and perched on the windowsill, one leg dangling down. Evan wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. Rihette heard him say, "I must be dreaming…" (sniff and sob in between), "There is nothing much to do… I must see Miss Dell. I’m hallucinating. I’m hallucinating…."

Evan continued chanting as Rihette stood up in front of him, "Evan, mind looking up for once?"

Evan still chanting the same, shook his head and looked up.

SMACK!

Evan, stunned and quite awake by now, looked up with wide eyes.

"Now does that bring you out of your sleep, Mr. Evan Doran?"

Rihette breathed in deeply and said, "I didn’t know someone who was apparently as bold as you could be a cry baby like… who else? YOU!"

Evan’s look of utter confusion irritated Rihette as she glared at him mercilessly, "Have you no sense of what is happening? Now what’s gotten into you?" She shook her head and said, "your teacher was right, you of all people are a dodo…."

She settled back on her seat- the window-sill. Evan stopped sobbing and said, "Well then I don’t think that you can understand how I feel. Not like you lost someone…"

‘Dodo, she said’, thought Evan; "How did you know that female called us a dodo? How did you…"

Rihette cut him off as she replied with a grin, "Well duh! I’ve been tracking you for the past few days… thought I’d rather confirm whether you really needed me or not…"

"Is this all really happening… I mean are you really here?"

She blew the air and it ruffled his hair out of his face, "If you felt that breeze, sure as hell, I am here."

Evan stood up, a bit groggy from the previous day and walked in the blink of an eye was next to Rihette. She smiled at him, he peered in her eyes and asked, "How did I do that?"

Rihette said gently climbing off and leading him towards the door, "Your powers are returning. Your coronation is drawing nearer Evan… Hurry…"

Evan confused slightly enquired, "Why…? Is something wrong?"

"No nothing’s wrong, unless of course you don’t want to start a fight with the devil again… he’s up and he’s looking for you."

Evan’s grip on Rihette’s hand grew tighter as he pushed open the door to the dining hall. The battlefield from yesterday. The ravens had obviously been cleaning up. The decoration had been changed from red to black and purple. There were specks of a few more colors here and there. The ravens seemed to leave him with his so- called privacy as he continued walking towards his seat. It was placed adjacent to the devil’s. Evan stifled a tiny wave of frustration when he saw the position of his chair. Maybe the devil wanted to nick away every bit of peace he had left- placing the chair right under his nose. ‘I’d rather sit in his lap…’ thought Evan as he settled on the chair while Rihette sat on the table, unnoticed by anybody but Evan. The breakfast was already laid. Evan waited for the devil. He had a feeling the devil would try to get into a sweet-talk. Rihette said in low tones, "Don’t act as if I’m there even if I talk to you. Play along if I trip something by mistake. Hark! Here he comes!"

Evan turned sheepishly to look at his uncle. He looked sort of ill. Had he beaten him up so badly that he had to look so ill till the next day. Objectionably, Evan was feeling sorry for his uncle. Rihette grumbled something about brainwashing people.

"Ah! Evan… I see, you turned up for breakfast… Not angry with me are you , young lad?"

Evan mildly surprised because he was expecting this said curtly, "Why would I? Yesterday was a draw…."

"The first one I believe. …"

Evan said through gritted teeth as he felt strength his confidence to him, "I’m not your … my name’s Evan."

The devil sighed deeply and nodded, "Very well Evan, if that’s what you’d like to be called. I think it’s time you took my place…"

Evan was about to say something but Rihette muffled his mouth. Evan looked at her annoyed but she gave a wise old angel like expression and whispered into his ears (even though had she yelled anything, nobody would hear it), "Listen to him. Let him speak. Use your opportunities for your hatred lies beyond duty…"

‘What is she talking about? Oops I guess I shouldn’t be thinking about her now… he might understand’. Something told him that everything related to Rihette was immune to the devil. Still he avoided thinking of her after that.

"Yes Evan? What do you think? You proved yourself to be a suitable heir… now you are capable enough of handling the devil’s throne."

Rihette eyed the devil curiously as she heard Evan and the devil talk.

"I’m not sure, uncle… I don’t know a thing about the curse you rule… I don’t know what you do with the cursed…" His breathing quickened as he felt thoughts clogging in his mind. Everything was going the wrong way. Evan felt a hand on his shoulder, it was Rihette- "Evan don’t worry… we’ll get out of this. I’m with you… relax. Tell him you need time to think about this."

Evan tried to relax, he strained his dry mouth to say, "I guess I’ll need a few days to think it over. I’m not ready… yet."

The devil supported his frame on his elbows and slowly approximated his fingertips, "Oh yes you are Evan. How else can you explain yesterday’s phenomenon?"

Evan of course by now had understood that it was because of Rihette he had escaped the devil’s fire. Rihette searched for words to say that on Earth he was an incomplete soul. His other half was in Rihette as hers was in Evan’s. It had been very difficult for Razek to explain it to Rihette. Evan fiddled quietly with his fingers. How could he say that the person the devil had so ravishingly killed, had come back to him? At least that’s what he thought. Rihette whispered in his ear- "Tell him you need time to decide. He will let you take your time. Just say it."

Evan wondered if he was doing the right thing, "Uncle, I’ll tell you my decision after a week’s time. Let us start breakfast. I’m starving."

His uncle smiled and started on his food- meat, water, meat, coffee, meat, eggs, meat and did I mention-meat?

Evan glanced sideways to look at Rihette, she was wearing a lavender top with a blue jeans. Her feet, which had been bare, were now enclosed in 3-inch heels. He saw her pulling out a chocolate out of thin air and tear the wrapper. She saw him looking- "Sorry man! Can’t afford to give this to you in front of your uncle… he’ll know if I do."

"But I… "

"But what Evan?" asked his uncle, trying his best to sound kind but honestly, he sounded as if somebody had pulled at his vocal cords.

Evan licked the foam from over the coffee and said, "Nothing, I was just wondering if I should take a holiday from school today. I wanted to go out to the city… had some shopping to do."

Evan looked around and saw Rihette grinning, damn… she was good- it was Rihette. She was controlling his lips now. ‘That girl!’ thought Evan as he continued tasting the foam slowly.

"As you wish … uh I mean Evan."

Evan wondered if the devil was genuinely fond of him or was he just faking it?

REUNION…

Evan walked across the corridor. It was a week since she had died. The gross feeling in his gut hadn’t left him yet… probably because he had not let go of some hope that a dead friend would come back. Whispers and stares followed him everywhere. Be it his classroom or the human resource department he went to because his teachers had coaxed him to. Hikari also went there and every alternate day they had class together. He found solace in the fact that he wasn’t the only one missing her. He thought it would make Rihette happier.

"They had just started getting on solid ice… and then she died"

"Sad, huh? Poor fellow. I feel bad for him… Maybe he’ll want to be with some other girl now, how about that girl- that Japanese girl Hikari or whatever?"

Evan could feel his hand curl into fists. They were talking about him right in front of him. "Not their fault, you’ve got a great sense of hearing being a devil…" a voice said from somewhere. Evan stopped dead in his tracks. It was definitely a male voice but he couldn’t see anybody in close range. He stood there looking absurdly around at the others. The strange warmth was gone. People stared at him, sympathizing with his madness. Evan was disturbed throughout the class. His mind flicking from Rihette to that voice.

"Evan…" said a timid voice.

It was Hikari.

He was asleep on his desk when Hikari called for him. She stood alone in the class. Except for them, no one was there. Evan was very protective about Hikari. She was so little. Evan dumped his sleep and said, "Hi Hikari. Hope you are fine…"

She smiled sadly and said, "Not worse than you, Miss Dell asked you to meet her; as soon as possible."

A few minutes they were quietly walking down to the human resource department. Hikari bade him good bye and left for her counselors room. She sure was opening up better.

The beautiful Miss Dell allowed Evan in. It was a special counsel session for Evan.

"Today, we shall talk about letting go of the guilt you have been so strongly anchored."

Evan hated that part. She’d try to make him feel something he didn’t feel. It was his fault that she died. No one really knew the truth so they thought that he could do nothing to save Rihette and her mother was troubling him. Sighing, Evan said, "Alright. But I really need to rush home today, I’m in a hurry."

She smiled and said mischievously, "What have you planned up, at home?"

Before he could stop himself he said, "Nothing much except report to that oaf… I mean, I’ve got to watch this program, Rihette liked it too."

She caught him there and probed, "So you aren’t exactly well off at home either," she paused dramatically and said, "Well I had a troubled past too but that’s how the world is…"

Evan knew his uncle received what he said about him being an oaf in front of someone else. The pull which forced him to leave everything else and reach his uncle started making him mad.

"Miss Dell, I’m really sorry but we must end this session right here…"

"Evan I heard you were hallucinating today…"

Evan pulled out his car keys and slung his backpack over his shoulder and gave a helpless gesture- "Trust me, I wasn’t"

Evan pushed the chair back and apologized profusely, "I’m sorry, I have to go… please understand."

The bewildered teacher stared in disbelief at his mood swings and said, "Yeah I do, but I think you need some help…"

Evan said as he pushed past the irritating shelves, "I will, if I don’t reach home now…."

That was the last of what she heard. Shaking her head, she wondered how she was to detain this cyclonic personality from destroying himself.

The car’s engine roared to life as Evan’s turbo car waved through the traffic breaking beliefs with its speed.

"Stop it, please. I’m on my way…" he was yelling into his cell phone.

"Listen, I know very well how to control my tongue… Shut up! I’m driving… STOP IT!" Evan screamed at his uncle through the phone. He barely managed to swerve the car to a side as a tanker sped along. His uncle was reaching heights, trying to control his day… how dare he?

Evan raged violently as he parked the car in the garage and flew straight to his room. His uncle yelled from the west of the house- "EVAN! Report NOW!"

He banged his head a few times to reduce his urge to clobber his uncle and fuming reached his uncle’s room.

"Why do you talk about your sweet uncle in such harsh tones?"

Evan started yelling, "Listen, I’m not exactly glad with your ways… your ravens complain about me to you…"

His uncle sneered with pride, "Oh Please! Don’t blame them… it’s not they who complain, they just take orders…" his smile curled into an evil curve, "They are just my slaves… nothing more…."

Evan balled his fists and struggled to prevent those legs of his from bounding across the room and clobbering the man sitting there. Why was he so bound to him? Why wouldn’t he leave him alone? Evan trembled visibly and anger ran through his veins. He set his jaw firmly and spoke in an angry way, "LEAVE ME A-LONE! I need some privacy if you want me to live here with you…"

That did it. It was the one thing that angered the devil more than anything, Evan’s threats of leaving. He fumed like a senile hag and screamed as he converted into a full devil. His pure form was horrid. He looked red, eyes so big, as big as coins, his hands tore at the curtains as he threw his wine glass aside-

"SHUT YOUR MANDIBLE.... I’ll teach you to mess with me. You threatened the devil; I’ll give you the reasons necessary to make you stay. I’ll not spare you the pain…." So saying the devil took out a huge javelin and hurled it towards him. Evan prepared by loading an assegai in the air, hoping that it would reach the devil before he himself would receive any injuries from his uncle’s blow. Usually he didn’t even have the time to pull out a weapon and in the rare few times he did have a chance, he was touched by the devils flames (Devil’s flames are injuries inflicted directly by the devil) which made his attacks vain.

Someone stepped in between him and the devil, who stopped the devil’s flames. He felt warmth flood him as he slowly fell to the floor. The last thing he saw was the devil lying unconscious. His assegai had hit the devil… but the devil’s flame did not touch him. Somehow… someone was there… who had shielded him from the devil and his wrath.

Rihette settled cosily near Evan’s unconscious body. She had followed the ravens into his room and then went in search of the devil. His room was open. When she peeked inside, he was sound asleep with many ravens watching him. If she could, she would have killed him then and there but that would leave Evan as incomplete, unturned and so the heir forever. She had tiptoed back to Evan’s room and seen him sleeping still. ‘Wait… wait for him to get up and see me, more than alive’, thought Rihette. She waited long and patiently till the next day. Her eyes alert, she looked for any signs of troubled sleep. She saw the sunset and then the dusk arrived bringing with it the tiredness in Rihette.

Evan felt a cool sensation over his arm. He turned to the other side and bumped nose- to ‒ nose with Rihette. He could see her face, the innocence was the same, the stubborn nose in place. Her hand rested on his arm- the cool sensation. He closed his eyes. Maybe Miss Dell was right, he was hallucinating. He made a mental note to see that counselor again. Evan unconsciously put his arm over her shoulder and settled to sleep for some more time. ‘Wait, that body is so solid…’ Evan’s eyes opened to look straight into Rihette’s alarmed face.

Rihette felt Evan’s hand, her eyes flew open as she stared at Evan’s black eyes. She said after a few lengthy seconds, wide eyed- "Long time since I saw your eyes…."

Evan replied gulping, "Ya… long time…."

They stared at each other for a very long time, it was after a few minutes that Rihette, and Evan realized how close they were to each other. Awkwardly Evan took away his hands and sat up. Rihette on the contrary let her hand slip off. She pulled the light quilt over her head and heard Evan say- "Listen, if you are an illusion, please go away. I don’t wish to hurt my memory of you or myself for that matter. Please…"

"I’m not a memory anymore Evan…" Rihette said from under the quilt as Evan continued looking out of the window into the rising sun’s eye.

INSIDE REFLECTION’S END- GOD’S PALACE…
Evan ambled with one hand in his pocket and the other holding a suitcase. He had gone shopping soon after his uncle had made the ravens shift all his belongings. The suitcase had a photo of Rihette from the college journal and a brand new laptop. Evan walked briskly down the lane, his laptop gravitating in the suitcase. He stopped at the bend, their bend. Emotions flooded him. He closed his eyes trying to force flashes of her birthday and their walk together out of his mind. Evan heard her say, "Don’t stop, and move on…" Startled, he turned around searching for her, half expecting her to hug him just like the other day. She was nowhere just a warm feel on his shoulder left him wondering, was she somewhere there?

"Razek! You’ve got an angel. Receive her at the first cloud," said the guardians’ God. Razek nodded and breathed in deeply. He could see the moon on this side of the heavens. She was the third angel he had received, since he had become a guardian. He had to allow them to decide where they wanted to go, what they wanted to do after death. He went through a scroll placed on the reception counter. It had all the information about Rihette. He read it carefully and winced when he saw the mode of death- ‘murder by burning’ it said. More was yet to come… he saw that she was the second archangel sent to Earth with her partner. Had she been unsuccessful?
She arrived cuddled like a baby. Her feathery white dress blew gently around her as it glowed softly.
"She isn’t likely to stay over in heaven so soon. I know you have guessed that, already."
Razek smiled and held Rihette’s sleeping body in his lap. Shifting from cloud to cloud, Razek reached a secluded corner, it was his favorite, far from the hustle bustle of the gods and angels. It stood on the brink of the heavens and the Earth. That way Razek could literally look down on the people of Earth and guide them if they were in real trouble. Sighing, he closed his huge wings around Rihette, because her body felt cold.

Rihette felt soft cotton over her skin. She must have been in hospital; the doctors must be treating her…. She yawned to life… after life, as the first sunbeams warmed Razek’s feathers.

Evan pushed open the heavy doors of the palace only to let himself in. He passed his uncle’s meeting hall quietly, trying to tip toe across to his floor. Luckily, his uncle wasn’t allowed on his floor. It was one of the conditions he had laid down to live with his uncle.
"Evan… hiding, eh?"
‘DAMN!’ muttered Evan as he plastered a sarcastic smile on his face and entered the hall. He laid the suitcase on the table and sat opposite his uncle. He looked so wicked, those black eyes which he had unluckily inherited from his grandmother. He raised an eyebrow and said, "Why did you call me in?"
"I guessed you would be mourning the death of your dear little friend, I feel sorry for you, Evan…."
"Oh! Don’t bother! You know the joy of killing, I would like to know the pain of being killed."
"You sure are so like your mother. Ah! Poor thing she was a nice little lady…."
It did not matter much to Evan because he didn’t remember anything about his past except one piece- his end.
Evan fumed with anger. He had to learn about all his powers as soon as possible. His uncle was the only one to teach him but he wasn’t exactly on talking terms much less become his student.
It was almost afternoon lunch was being laid. Evan hadn’t till now eaten with his uncle, food was always sent to his own dining room.
"How about we have lunch together?" asked his uncle, his voice resonating across the hall with doubt. Evan said thoughtfully, "What do you have for lunch? The same thing as me right?"
The devil nodded expectantly. Evan nodded after sometime and said, "Alright, let me give it a try."
"I have something for you, something which you have never tasted before," he grinned. Evan shrugged and continued reading a scroll that was left on the table by a raven.
"When you’ll become the devil, your signature will be on those type of scrolls." His uncle seemed to be desperate after him. Was something wrong? Or was it really his liking him.
Evan washed his hands in the hot water and then settled in his chair. He was waiting for the devil to start when he saw his uncle order a raven to get something. The devil smiled smugly at him and Evan shook his head. He knew if he didn’t listen to his uncle, he would again be on his bed with a broken head.

Evan bent backwards and allowed the raven to serve some colorless fluid in a tiny glass. As soon as the raven left, his uncle stood up and said, "Drink up the whole thing, don’t leave a drop of it. You’ll feel good." Evan looked at it. It smelt of spirit.
The devil raised a toast and said, "To the devil’s heir… who has finally agreed to stay in his palace!"
Evan had to smile at that. His uncle was a crack, from the first time he saw him after death. He lifted the glass slowly and without the smell ruining the taste he gulped the small amount down. It felt like heat melting down his empty stomach. His eyes flew to alertness for a minute when he asked with a worried look on his face, "What was that, you wicked oaf?" His uncle grinned and said, "Tequila! Don’t you like it Evan?"
Evan tried to keep his eyes open, he had never tasted alcohol before just heard that it tasted something like spirit and here he was gaily gulping down a whole peg of Tequila or whatever it was. His uncle started his meal occasionally glancing at Evan and his efforts to stay away from the drowsiness pressing in on him, as if a news channel was on.
"Damn you!" Evan raged before collapsing on the table. His uncle looked pitifully on, finished his meal and left the room. He ordered the ravens not to awaken him, no matter what.

Rihette felt feathers around her. She blinked slowly, getting accustomed to the sunbeams which danced at the edges of Razek’s wings. She looked up to see him lost in thought. He saw her looking and smiled down at her.
"Where’s mum?"
"She went to heaven. She met your father."
"Why did she leave me here all alone?" Rihette asked tears starting to threaten her eyes.
"She did not leave you alone. She asked me to look after you. anyways, once you come here, there is no need for you to tell anything to each other. It’ll get communicated automatically."
"But still!"
"Rihette, you must understand that your father had waited in this place for a very long time here, he himself doesn’t remember how many years. If your mother wouldn’t have gone, it would have been unjust on your mother’s part."
Rihette seemed to understand as she sat thinking in Razek’s lap.
"When will I go there?"
Razek said softly, "You have unfinished business down there," he pointed to the ground, under the clouds, "Someone needs your help…."
Rihette gasped, "Evan! I had completely forgotten about him!"
Razek felt the desperation in her voice, "how can I get in touch with him now! He doesn’t know that I’m alive…"
Razek cut her short firmly and said, "No, you are not. You are dead. Here you are an angel; I’ve something important to reveal…." He picked her up in his arms and flew through the dark mist. "Where are we going?" asked Rihette.
"We are going to send you to where you should be. That is if you will wish for it. Now don’t you distract me, I’m not good at flying through the fog."
He heard Rihette squeal in insecurity as he smirked.
Fires bursting from water fountains lighted the corridor. The floor was made of God knows what (honestly, God alone knew what was all that made of)! It was almost as if walking over water. Water from a jar flew upwards and then back again to the ground only to sprout and fly once again. Razek said casually, "This is God’s palace- the reflection’s end, He calls it."
Rihette looked around in wonder. She asked softly as if scared that the walls had ears, "What does He look like?"
He said as they continued walking along the corridor, "He looks just what you want Him to look like", he saw her concentrating hard and said, "Nah! Don’t even try it! Your image of Him will be not change even if you think of it now."
"What is it like for you?"
Razek smiled and said, "You should not tell what your God looks like… That’s a lovely secret between you and God. That way whenever you want to meet Him, He’ll be available."
Rihette was impressed and thought how good it would be to see God. Her image of God, would be worth seeing. Razek stopped in front of a very ordinary looking door, which was no different from the other doors they had seen- intricate carvings depicting Adam and Eve’s garden walk. She asked him, "Are you sure this is the one?"
Razek answered mischievously, "Well, any door you open will lead to God, only I had to get you settled with the atmosphere so you wouldn’t be nervous in there…"
Rihette said in mock anger, "Why you…"
"It’s not like your legs will pain or even that they can pain!"
So saying, he pushed her towards the door. His wings started appearing and he said, "I’ll be your guardian, if you want. You just have to say my name and I’ll get in touch with you. After this, I may or may not be able to see you, depends on you. Don’t panic Rihette. It was nice meeting you."
Rihette said as he started vanishing, "Hey! What’s your name?"
But he was gone by then. Rihette stood there breathing deeply, hoping to meet God, just as she had imagined.

Evan thought his head would burst into a million pieces if he didn’t help himself. He opened his eyes groggily, the dining room was empty. There was nothing on the table. He vaguely remembered drinking that wine or whatever his uncle had given him. Not again! His abdomen was giving him a hard time. He held his aching stomach and dragged himself to his room. He opened the door of his bedroom. It had soft lighting. Darkness rested in the corners and with the shadows. It sat ready to receive him. The darkness could pass messages to him. Right now it asked him to relax and that she could order one of the ravens to get his dinner. He nodded sleepily and went to the bathroom, puking his heart out. Evan came back to his bed to catch some more sleep when he saw a raven standing with a bowed head at his door with his dinner. Evan got it from the raven and ordered him to leave. Settling down on the carpeted floor, Evan ate up all that was there on the tray- from the chicken sausages to the ice cream.

Rihette stood at the door, her hands clammy and sweaty, how could she feel all that when she wasn’t alive? Forget that, she thought as she pushed open the door effortlessly. Inside was a universe, where God- a man in his 50’s sat in royal clothes and beautiful features on the edge of the crescent moon.
"Ah! Rihette, so you finally came to see me. Razek sure took his time…."
"Razek, the angel who left me here?"
"Yes! Isn’t he sweet? He takes care of half my chores. Good lad, that Razek!"
‘Oh! So his name was Razek…’ thought Rihette.
"There is some unfinished business down there, he said. I think he is right."
She waited for a response before saying, "Should I go down there, again?"
He said softly, "When your will becomes wish, your freedom becomes power. So, tell me Rihette, what is your will?"
She thought for some time and said, "I don’t really know the magnitude of what I left unfinished…"
He brushed aside her concern in seconds saying, "Don’t you worry about that! I have to tell you such a lot of things you know. Come sit here with me…" He patted to his side, and asked her to join her on the moon. She walked through the clouds and grabbed His hand. Within minutes she was sitting with God over the moon watching the sun rise in some part of the world.
"Listen carefully now- I’m not always right, but I’m never wrong either. So heed my words. Many years ago, the devil ascended from hell to the Earth. He started the vulnerability of the humans and so he settled down there. But things are going bad already, so we," God stopped for a bit to see if she was listening, she was and so he continued, "…we sent our two best combatants archangels down to the earth. There, even before the two angels could grow up, the devil almost killed your partner, the first archangel. Mistaking his powers to be of devilish origin, the devil named him heir."
Rihette thought of Evan promptly, she knew more than well that he was the unwilling heir of the devil.
"But our dear archangel does not know that he is an angel. Unless his partner doesn’t go and help him out, how will he know who he is?"
Rihette said uncertainly, "Could you please explain it in Evan’s terms?"
"Of course! Listen- Evan is in fact the last of the surviving combatant archangels. The archangels are the guardians of the heavens. He was never born as a human but because the devil settled on the Earth, Evan had to be sent to Earth in the devil’s pursuit."
Rihette nodded her head to say that she understood what he said.
He took a deep breath and continued as the sun grew stronger, "But then the devil murdered his brother and nearly killed him. Sensing that he had some magic powers, he mistook him to be a devil descendant and named him the devil’s heir."
Rihette asked, "How could someone consent for that? Unless of course that person is wicked." She was feeling so comfortable with God, so secure sitting next to him.
"We do not decide who is bad and who is not, it is a self judgment, your conscience can do that for you."
"Alright! Alright! It was a mistake. So, then what happened?"
"In return, Evan’s brother was restored to their parents who sadly had no recollection or evidence of the fact that they had one more . Everybody who knew him forgot him. The devil took Evan home and then to help him accept his identity as a part of the devil’s clan, erased all his past experiences other than his near death episode. Unknowingly this devil made him forget his true identity as an archangel. It was the devil’s way of saying that he really cared for Evan’s feelings. After that, Evan started life afresh in a new place. There he learnt about his powers and joined a college to prevent suspicion about who he was and where he was from…"
Rihette nodded thoughtfully and said, "You mean his previous life, with his parents has no effect on him?
God said gently, "You don’t know the Evan I sent on earth. His mind and conscience were always clear. He knew just what he was doing. From the beginning he knew he was an archangel but he did not tell anyone. That’s why he cannot remember who he is. Unless someone from here goes and helps him know that."
Rihette asked him pestering, "How was I related to him?"
God gave a grin and said, "You loved him and he loved you back. That is why I sent you both to work together. After all, home is where the heart is!"
Rihette understood how she had fallen for him in a matter of 2-3 days. Why she was so attracted to him and the reason for breaking down when she came to know they couldn’t be together anymore. She looked at God and said, "I want to go back, it’s my will…."
